Dioscorea or huai shan is a yam root which helps digestion, reduces blood sugar levels, strengthens spleen and kidneys. It acts as a expectorant and is known for relieving cough.
It is mildly sweet.
It also contains some valuable minerals such as potassium, iron, manganese, magnesium; and small amounts of zinc, calcium, selenium, and phosphorus. It maintains a good potassium-sodium balance as it is high in potassium and low in sodium thereby prevents osteoporosis (weak bones) and risk of heart diseases.
